Same issue. Multiple threads indicate that "dieseling" where the engine is so hot you get detonation without spark once the starter begins cranking (due to the high compression of the TC engine) which can then backfire against your starter and chew up that ring gear. I've had it backfire, and puff right out the air intake. I've started to call my Dyna Puff the magic dragon.
Anyways, I've installed a force convection system to cool my cylinder heads. I don't have hard starting issues anymore since I've installed them (last week), but time will tell. there are other fixes that talk about changing out internal components of the engine, etc. But I haven't tried any of those yet.
DO you start the bike in gear.I have experienced the same thing so I now start my bike in neutral,no trouble at all now starting my bike regardless of how long it's been riden or even if it's hotter than hell, might try that next time your out.

Same here. Actually had it backfire out the SE Heavy Breather so hard it blew out the gasket on the mounting plate.
I don't turn the ignition until my finger is on the start button if the motor is hot. Don't have any trouble if I act before the FP primes.
I think it is total BS that bikes that cost this much have this problem. It's a finicky b1tch, but I love her...
