After speaking with a mechanic from the local dealership today and finding out that doing my own service DOES NOT void the factory warranty I have decided to purchase a service manual and a few tools to save myself a ton of money.
Why this has taken me 2 years to figure out is beyond me. How many of you do your own service?
Doing your own maintenance will boost your confidence as it pertains to your own bike. You will gradually learn more and more, and maybe someday it will save your butt when the bike breaks down and you fix it yourself.
B.T.W., I even change and balance my own tires, that is how little I trust my life to some mechanic I don't know.
i have for years, it has saved me hundreds of $$! I had problems with my 99 ultra a couple of times, once for cam bearings and the other for a crank bearing. both times there never was a issue with the extended warrantee co. they can tell if you service your bike reguarly or not, the mechanic said the inner cover of my camm cover didnt even have a stain on it, it looked like it was new! but as said before document all oil changes and save all receipts, copy them the ink fades out on the originals!!
Doing my own maintenance since I rode away.
Having the manual is a must.
Like many here the money saved goes to the upgrades.
No one will care for your bike more than you. No one.
I just ordered the V twin powerpack from RPW. Comes with enough oil to do two changes, and enough tranny and primary fluid to do one. With two K&N filters it came in at $125 shipped. I don't know what a 5k and 10k service costs, but but I am guessing it's over $500 between the two. That alone saves enough to pay for a torque wrench, manual, and a decent lift. I've done my own service starting with the 5k, so it's already payed for all the specialty tools I need.
