I just had the dealership install a set of Metzler 880's and Progressive 412's on my 05' LowRider at my 10K service. Surprisely, they did the changes for just a minimal amount over the standard 10K service price. My question is this: I had read many posts that were positive about the Metzler's. Now I read some that say they wear out faster than the Dunlops and that you must keep them inflated higher than the stock tires. I got 10K+ out of the stock rear and the front actually didn't need to be changed yet. What mileage are you getting with your Metzlers? Also, what air pressure to you recommend? I rarely ride 2-up and many reporting lower mileages were RK, Ultra, and ST riders. Thanks for your response(s).
I haven't checked the pressure yet as they were put on 3 days ago, but I am shooting for 36 front and rear as that is what my manual says for 1 up. I could honestly care less about the mileage over the dunlops, I am never going back to those...They are hard as a rock and you ahve to force the bike into corners. Now it sticks well and falls into corners. Besides, my tires are one of the factos that my life depends on, it is worth a little more to me...
Stickier tire = less miles. But since you've only got two of them between you and the road, it's worth it
I know there are several tires that have a dual compound, different in the middle and on theedges, to try and give good mileage and good performance. Don'tthink they are available for the harley sizes. Seems Metzlers and Avons are the more popular aftermarket tires for harleys.
Go to the metzler website for the correct tire pressures.
Only check when the tires are cold, sitting for more than 3 hours
Metzlers are softer compound that's why they require the higher tire pressures...otherwise too much tire flexing in corners.
