Thought I'd adjust the clutch before I put it to sleep for the winter, Now I have no clutch, I did exactly as the shop manual says.................The lever has NO TENSION and the adjuster is all the way to the end for the 1/8" play at the lever It should be 1/8 now its like 1/2" .....WTF did I do lol
any suggestions??????
thank you
start over... close the adjuster... got into the basket and losen the jam nut, back it out and screw it in till you feel pressure, 1/2-3/4 turn out, tighten the jam nut... then adjust the cable... if you still have nothing you may have a snapped cable...
I did another adjustment still nothing .........I went as far as checking where the clutch cable goes into the trans (drained the trans) took the cover off to check the ball and ramp thinking that's where the problem was and everything is connected ...(amusing that's where the ball and ramp is ???? or is it behind the primary cover
thanks
It did not come loose from the ball and ramp. There is a retainer clip keeping it together. Go back to other side on primary. Since you have all kinds of free play already loosen the lock nut and screw set screw in till it touches using just slight thumb and index finger pressure. Pull in clutch and see if you see the diaphragm go in on the front of the clutch. If so keep the lever pulled in and screw the screw in another 1/2 turn or so to ensure threads are smooth since tighten locknut sometimes roughs them up and you get false reading on when play is truely gone. Now back out on screw and pull clutch lever and let it out and screw in adjust screw till it hits. If you do this a few time with the lever and adjuster screw you will get a fill as to when the play is really all take out. Now turn screw out about 3/4 turn and lock nut. Note that the lock nut only takes 72-120 in lbs. Do not over tighten. If by chance you do not see diaphragm move, lengthen cable under cable adjustment boot till you do. Now do the cable adjustment to get the 1/8 lever play. Be sure to check it with handlebars turned to both side and then recheck it after cable it tied back up to down tube. I think this is were yours got messed up in the cable free play adjustment. If after you do above and it happens again it could be your throw out bearing in your transmission. My friends Fatboy did what yours did when his broke up. However it's real easy to get cable too long when you adjust it if you do not lever it a few time when you do the adjustment at the adjuster on the clutch.

this is what I have as seen in the pics ...........to get the lever even close to the 1/8" play as in the pic the adjuster with jam nut is out too far....... I guess I'll be taking it in to the "stealer" this weekend
If the cable is adjusted all the way out, (and not in, double check this) go ahead and adjust the clutch all the way in till there is no free play.
if you still don't have any tension, the then problem is on the other side. either your cable Has broke or has come loose from the ramp coupler or the ramp coupler has come loose or broke.
This is not hard or complicated, but you will need to take off your exaust to get at the trans cover.
Before you check that leave the cover off the primary and pull the clutch to see if the clutch is moving at all.
that and take some photos to post, this will help us help you.
Thanks Harleycruiser..................I think I'll load the bike up on the trailer and haul it to the stealer....just too busy to dick with it, however I will post on here the outcome and the price of the repair......
thanks for the advise again
If your bike will be in winter storage, you will have at least 4-5 months time to figure out unless you are busy forever lol. If it was good before, the only thing you touched is the adjustment, I can't see why not, probably something simple not rocket science.
CHECK THE CABLE AGAIN!

Can't you throw out the ***** in the clutch or something like that if you pull the lever with the adjuster out? Something to that effect? Sorry for the terminology, but maybe someone knows what I am talking about.
