its basically just personal preference. I have had many bikes over the years and although I loved my heritage softail the dyna is a way better bike for me. I wouldn't trade my dyna for all the softails in the world.

Aesthetically speaking, I love the paint jobs on the Softtails...but to each their own

I used to have a Fatboy, Softail is for look, Dyna is for performance and LOOK.
I still want a Softail Deluxe if I can have 2

As much as I love my Wide Glide, and would not give it up for a softail, there are more accessories/parts for the Softail platform. More custom bikes made from it as it is easier to deal with not having the side shocks. Having the oil tank separate can be seen as a plus or a minus depending on your point of view.

That said....in stock form...a dyna is more like a sportster in handling (they are not nicknamed "slop tails" for nothin) . Of course you can modify any bike to handle the way you want....its just easier on a dyna to make it perform.

I have both a softail and a Dyna. They are different beasts. The Dyna is more for handling and speed whereas the softail is a lowrider for cruising.

Of course you can set either bike up any way that you like, but that is how most people do it.

Buddy was getting divorced and needed cash. Price was too good to pass up and I had an idea of the history of the bike.

Just traded my 2007 fatboy that I've had since new for flmy 103 powered fatbob. The difference between the two is literally as opposite as night and day. My dyna has vastly superior handling. The rear swingarm on the softail is sloppy and definitely not as good as a dyna. Far less stabiilty. On a twistie mountain road I always yearned for a better handling bike... I was constantly reaching the fatboys handling ceiling and over time was really annoying.

If u merely wanted a boulevard cruiser or bar hopper id recommend a softail. In my 5 years as a softail owner, that's my final conclusion of the line. Good looks, good for easy cruising. Poor handling is the biggest mark against it. didn't give me any confidence riding two up or trying to ride hard.

If I can't do that, its not for me.

If you can test ride the dyna you would want to get and a softail you would want to get as well. Then decide.
