So, a few weeks ago, I purchased and installed the Mikuni HSR42 easy kit on my bike. I travel frequently for work, so I haven't had time to play with it since I installed it. Couple days ago, a friend came over to help me get it dialed in and took it for a quick ride...
Wow! it feels like a completely different bike! The throttle response was so crisp and it just pulled harder in every gear?! Is this all just in my head?? Why don't they come this way from the factory?
Oh, and I had the pipes and SE AC on before I took the CV carb off, so no difference there.
probably just cost. Harley (or at least my local dealer) sells a "screaming eagle" mikuni. its basically an HSR42 that they put a SE chrome cover on top and comes in a SE box. ask me how i know? i made the mistake of buying one through them at $500 when jpcycles has them for $300. but i must agree, i threw it on my old ironhead sporty and once i jetted it down, it ran awesome!! its a great carb.
Put one on my 1200 sporty, and it made a BIG difference. I'd say it's as responsive as the fuel injection system on my WG and starts instantly. Great mod.
I have been running my hsr 42 for about 6 months and it makes a huge difference. Did you use the jets that came in it or put the larger jets in? Did you shim your needle to the 2nd clip? I put in the bigger jets but still need to shim my needle. One of these days.

Haven't fiddled with it yet. Just took it out of the box, installed it (had to file a couple cylinder fins) and adjusted the air screw and idle. I've heard that the other jets in the kit get better mileage, but I plan on sending it to my harley mechanic to fine-tune it...
oh, forgot to mention, I also put the Mikuni choke/enricher cable on it when I did the install. Ever since I bought the bike (used, but new to me) the stock harley choke never would stay out no matter how tight I made the collar on it. Sucked always having to hold the choke out when It warmed up...
