RE: 2012 WG, Mighelin "Schorcher" with Michelin tube. 4,750 miles on all.
I had the rear go flat. Could not find anything in tire and only found leakage around base of valve stem after soaping everything down. Dealer said I needed new tire and tube for $485 because the "integrity had been compromised". I told them to replace tube only and was told they wouldn't do. I took bike to an Indi who said the leak was caused by a hole in a crease in the tube as a result, he says, of the tire/tube/wheel not being properly assembled at factory. NO HOLE IN TIRE. $88 to fix. Went back to Dealer to bitch about their service dept and got a song and dance BS story about how they always replace the tire if they have to break down a tire for whatever reason "for safety". I said fine, changing all out since this is a warranty issue. They said they couldn't help me since I took it to the Indi. They even went so far as telling me I'm now assuming all risk if there is a tire issue. As a new rider I've lost all confidence in the bike and my dealer. What to do?
Sounds like a horrible dealer. I was on a recent trip and had Bald Eagle Harley in Marquette, MI do an internal patch and add a tube to a punctured tire for a great price. They just added a note to the work order that it was "not reccomended" but all is well. Worked out great and I was 2 days from home.
I would go ahead and accept responsibility for that tire and run it. You pretty much did anyway when you took it to another mechanic. If you don't trust the other mechanic, you shouldn't have taken it there anyway. Your only alternative is to buy the new tube and tire at the dealer. I've already started assuming responsibility for my service work. I'm sure my tires aren't that far away either.
sounds like you dealt with a bad dealer/service dept. ive never had a problem with mine. had my spokes go loose on me, they tightened them no questions asked. they even suggested to my cousin that he buy a tire from somewhere else since it would be cheaper than going through them. i have a great deal of respect for my dealer. if i were you, just avoid that dealer and enjoy the ride!!!!
Your Indy was straight up with you. If he replaced the tube and the tire has not gone flat again, trust him and ride with confidence in yourself!
If he wasn't a stand up guy, he would have tried to sell you a tire as well.
