Have Walmart Bell and a Harley one. (came free with bikes?HA) Both work fine. Like Harley one since indicator lights give better indication of were it is at in charge. Be sure it's a maintenance one and says for gel battery.

Drain your primary and see if you have any telltale copper bits in it. With an '06, you could be dealing with the "self-destructing rotor" issue that may've lunched your stator when the screws/screw-heads failed. If this is your root cause, be sure and upgrade to the '07 rotor/stator; may as well do the Baker IPB (the other '06 issue) upgrade, too.

I'm sitting there in discuss when I here some power noise and the speedo needle starts to dance till it hits the 50mph mark. At that point I pull the battery. so It must be a short? gonna slide the tank back and take look tomorrow.

Did you look at the primary oil? Look for copper color in it, as was also previously suggested.
Stator self destructing is the first thing that comes to mind on your '06

may also want to make sure you do not have a pinched wire under the dash

I recently unwrapped my wiring to the dash and found alot of bad solder connections done by the local harley shop when they swapped a tach on before I bought the bike. One connection was causing my oil dummy light to be on when it shouldn't be. I disconnected from under the tank, unwrapped and resoldered properly, used heat shrink rather than electrical tape over my connections and all is well. Good luck.

took a look under the dash found no pinched wires. I'm thinking its under the tank. Maybe something pinched after the bar swap. I can't prime the fuel pump since I can't start it to clear the fuel line.. So I'm sure this is going to be messy. Im also going to check the primary oil as well.

for cheap charger, hit walmart, and get one that will charge at least 6 amps on high and will also trickle charge.
If you don't ride frequently get a battery maintainer, basically a trickle charger that will kick in and out automatically.

It won't be messy and shouldn't take too long. I took my tank off before using the cut pop bottle with hose trick to drain, spilled some gas, but found out the hard way it was not necessary to get at the wiring connectors under the tank on my bike. Slid the little plastic shield out from under the tank frame, popped the grommets on either side of frame and you can easily pull out the connectors for the dash/signals/etc. I would disconnect my dash connector and use a multi-meter to troubleshoot the dash wiring as others have suggested. There are wiring diagrams on the forum that give the color codes and tell what each wire does. Once you have the dash disconnected you can pretty much take the dummy lights/speedo off the bike and unwrap the wiring as well if you like. If it feels like a mess grab a coffee ( or beer), then go back to it later. I don't know if you have to take the tank off on the 2006 to get at the wiring connectors, just saying how I got to my 2008. Hope it helps.
