Default Stupid question time... 1st gear.

Don't beat me up for this stupid question.... that's my wife's job LOL, but I have a question about my 5 month old Super Glide Custom which maybe dumb.

With my bike turned off and in 1st gear, I could of sworn that I used to be able to squeeze in the clutch and then was able to walk the bike forward and backwards.

Now I know most of you would say that I should put the bike in neutral to walk it, but that is not my question.

On your bikes, with the bike turned off and in first gear can you squeeze in the clutch and walk the bike? Or... was this a figment of my imagination?

Try taking a step backward then a step forward. It should go. Maybe your clutch cable is out of adjustment.

Good luck.

Try it when the engine is hot and it will move freely in gear with the clutch pulled in. Normal.

I noticed this one week ago and today AFTER I adjusted the clutch plate and cable. I do have between 1/16 and 1/8th inch play in clutch lever cable which is correct by the manual.

Being a wet-clutch, the temp of the lube makes a difference in whether or not the bike will move easily.

Temp will make a difference but should be able to roll fwd / rev even when cold. Sometimes you just have to give it a little more umph to break the friction between the plates, then once it starts rolling it gets a lot easier.

Once you cut it off, the disk are going to drag even if the clutch is pulled in. If everything else appears to be normal it is OK. It will also jerk forward a little left in gear with the clutch pulled in if you start it that way. The clutch adjustment is simple and any owner with just a few wrenches should be doing his own to make sure all is well. You probably need a T27 torx for the derby cover. A 3/16 allen and a 3/4 offset box wrench for the clutch adjuster nut and a 1/2 and 9/16 open end for the cable length.

+1... Give that man a cigar.

Once you shut down and, the oil begins to cool off plus being squeezed out of the clutch., things begin to get stuck together. Rock it back and forth, it'l break loose.

Best wishes....Tim(HT)

The simple answer is knowing how your clutch works. When you squeeze the lever you simply take pressure off the clutch plates. If they are stuck together because of adjustment, fluid selection or temperature then you will not be able to roll the bike. Once the motor is running the it will overcome the friction and break loose.

Even though that is what the manual says its too much slack, 1-2mm is what I use....1mm is 1/25 of an inch.
