A couple of notes. 1) cover all paint surfaces with a towel, I mean all, tank and front fender. Do one side at a time and make sure the front is supported. 3) loosening the upper tree pinch bolts really help in getting the cap off. HANG ON to the cap it's under a spring load and it WILL fly. Don't ask me how I learned all this.

Thanks, I was searching for answers to sizes as 1 3/8 fits my 2013 Sportster but not my 2000 Custom Chrome kit bike, it's to big & 1 5/16 is to small, so I'll try 35 mm & hope that fits. just 1 of the problems of owning a custom built bike with parts from different manufacturers

Why not just buy the proper socket for the fork caps?

DCP sells it for $16 shipped.

No need to guess at this stuff. Pick up a plastic dial caliper (cheap) so you can accurately measure it.

Also a Ford wrench could be used.

+1 on this. Everything I found seemed like it just didn't fit right. To lose and for some reason up here 35mm is pretty hard to find. I bought the HD socket and there was no need to wrap the nuts with tape no scratches or divots from the socket. It fit like it should and a sound investment for the proper tool IMO.
