Default Cams and tuning

Hey guys I am thinking about doing cams and dynoing my 2012 fat bob with the 103 motor. I need some advise on what size cams to go with. I already have Vance and Hines big shots and se cold air intake and se super pro tuner. Can anyone tell me what's involved in putting them in and how much the dealer should charge me for the install and the dyno. Thanks Eric

Eric I just did that. I went with Dave Mackie 575L cams, Bassani Road Rage pipe and a 30T. See this thread for the results.

If you're going to spend that kind of cash, then the real question is who is going to tune your bike. There are a ton of bad dyno tuners out there. The good ones are out there and most of the time they are not at the dealership.

I would go to the SERTPRO tuning sticky thread and ask if anyone there knows someone in your area.

I would put the pipes and A/C on yourself...very easy. Then it's around 300 bucks for a dyno tune

There's tons of info on cams already on the site but a couple of thoughts:

1. One size does not fit all. You need to decide where you want the power. There's three basic choices: Off-idle, torquey cams for a quick getaway and for around town. Mid-range, general purpose cams for an extra boost across the whole range, handy for any kind of riding particularly on highways. Top end cams for people that ride always at the red line.

2. Do not over-cam! This is getting fat cams that make peak numbers on the dyno. The trouble with these is that they shift the power into an area you might almost never use, like 6000+ rpm. This leaves dead spots elsewhere, particularly at lower RPMs, which is exactly where most Harley riders actually need the power.

I just swapped my cams a couple of weeks ago. Get a manual, read the forums, and watch the videos from S&S and Fuel Moto. With the right preparation, it is actually fairly straight forward.

Default Prices in Tulsa

Right now the dealer I use in Tulsa has their winter special going which is $1500 including labor, cams and dyno with the Super Race Tuner, but subtract the $500 for the tuner and get the cams, labor and dyno for $1000 at the most. They have several cams you could go with also, so don't just take the first pair they offer you. Check the specs on them and make sure they'll work with no extra head or valve work such as springs, etc. I'd do the adjustable pushrods while you're in there though.

Just my humble opinion!

Ride Safe!
