I definitely intend to, though I'm a little foggy on the exact lengths I should cut the hoses to. Any suggestions?

It's not the length of the hose that matters, it's where it sits inside the tank. It can be made a little shorter. HD only sells the pump with the hose permanently attached. I think it's possible to disassemble the hose from the pump without ruining it but I never tried. A search might pull up a how-to on just replacing the line.

Hard starting WHEN HOT was a common problem reported on this forum a few years ago for these bikes. A lot of guys report that the bike starts much better if the start button is pressed immediately after the on switch is flipped, i.e, don't let the fuel pump prime for more than a second or two. I found this to be true on my bike. I know this doesn't address the root cause or give you any ideas on how to fix it, but if it works, that may give you a better idea of what to check.
