I have been doing some research and I think I am going to put a set of streeglide shocks on my FXDL. I was just looking for some input from peole that have done it and see if the ride really changed.
I have an 01 FXDL. I put on a set of 13" shocks (unsure what they came off of) & I absolutely love it. It handles the bumps so much better. Rides like a Cadillac now. (lol)
I'd say go for it. With shocks & new valves my total was around $45. Best thing I've done to the bike so far.
i just added a set of the 12" to my FLD.. had them on my wide glide last year only change that i made was the oil, from what i have read on here the touring shocks only have 5wt oil in them and due to the angle of the shocks on the dyna frame you need at least 10wt in them..
i tried them with factory oil and the ride was too soft and almost baby carriage like so i swapped out to the 10wt and they rode perfect solo with 10lbs of air
now on the FLD i have them pumped up to 13 lbs due to extra weight of bags tourpack and all of the other crap i have in the bags and the ride and handling is perfect
and the bike sits about 1/2" lower over all so now i'm flatfooted finally.. definitely one of the best changes i have made to date
Your "baby carriage" description is spot on. I kind of like it that way : )
I know I have to put 25lbs in mine. I guess we could have shocks off of different models. I might have to change my oil out over the winter & see if that helps. I've seen videos on how they did it. "Seemed" easy enough.
Also to the OP. If you do go to put them on....you may need to add a couple washers so the rubber boot doesn't rub on the drive belt.
It's definitely worth doing. If you're patient you can find a nice set of shocks cheap. (I only paid $40 & they were practically new take-offs)(craiglist)
Personally. I search around & see if you can find a set....if not, do your other mods & wait for the right set.
you sholdnt need the washers as mine clear fine on both the wide glide when i had it and now the FLD, washers are required if putting them on a sportster..
Love them on my Sportster. Thinking about them on my WG...good to know about the oil swap. I know on the Sportster you could go stock oil and no air solo and about 10lbs with a passenger.
