Has anyone had experience making the conversion? My brother may need to have his wrist pinned which will eliminate his ability to use a twist throttle.
I have read a few threads where people discussed using a thumb throttle however nothing about the how to.
Bob
It is used on ATVs and is a single cable. There is a return spring on the carb. that pulls the throttle and cable back closed. I know on long steady runs my thumb gets tired holding it in one position and it does not have much pressure on it. After about 5-10 minutes I get a hand cramp so I have to grab it differently or change throttle position by increase or decrease.
Can he rotate his shoulder?
Reason: he may need to re-learn or re-program certain movements by using other articulations such as elbow and shoulder along with a possible handlebar or bar position change.
He should consider practice in a parking lot before entering traffic.
It would suck for the brain to send a signal to his wrist and for him to forget that the wrist is unable to acknowledge or respond correctly when involved in a panic situation.
Kuryakin makes a grip with a throttle boss on the end that would allow him to use some palm. Lifting his elbow would give slow and lowering fast (kinda dirt bike style)
I used to ride ATV's so I know what you are talking about (with age comes cage...building an off road rail). They make an assist extension that places the throttle paddle into your palm.
What I am really looking is to see if anyone has actually done the conversion. I think it will likely require some fabrication to make it work on a street bike. He rides a Victory Crossroads (no excuse offered here, but he is my brother and they say you gotta keep them. Well at least it's not a Yamaha...LOL!).
He can move his elboe so I told him to try using a Crampbuster and just bend his elboe. I road about 2 hours today keeping in mind that I could not bend my wrist. Worked pretty well under all conditions.
Bob
I just got out of a cast for a shattered wrist. Got 3 screws and 7 pins with a plate. I can move my wrist some but not much. I have been working on moving my arm so I can ride. I got an exercise thing at Wal Mart that is a handle with 2 grips and a spool in between. It has a rope on it and a weight anchor that you use your hands and arms to rolle up and down. It has helped me to use my arm and my wrist with what little movement it has. It may help him to use his arm so he can ride.
