should the neutral indicator switch on a 1989 FXRS be open or grounded when the transmission is in neutral?
On mine, the green light stays on in all gears unless I depress the brake, then it goes off.

Seriously, don’t have a manual for your bike but on my 2000 FXD it shows ground through the switch which would mean ground when in neutral. High probability they are the same but no guarantee.
