Think I'm gonna leave the rotors alone for now. I kind of like the way they look.
But since we still got a few more weeks of winter over here I'm planning on painting my lowers and front wheel. The previous owner did a so so job when he painted the lowers. You can see he didn't bother to paint the part where the caliper mounts are. Plus I jacked up the inside of the legs pretty good when I was trying to get the wheel off before I got the rotors machined. So I think I'm gonna try to hit it with appliance epoxy.
And for some reason I want to do the front wheel with white plasti dip. Not sure how it's gonna look so if I hate it it will be easy enough to peel off.
Quick update. Got my first ride of the season in yesterday. First ride on the new calipers. I only took it out for a few miles, mainly to warm up the oil prior to changing it and to get a feel for the new brakes.
First impression ... Holy Focking **** these things stop good!! Very happy. Feels like a whole new bike now. On the stock calipers I really had to squeeze the lever quite hard in order to come to a quick stop. I've had a few sketchy moments in the past when I got caught between a yellow and a red light and didn't feel like I'd be able to stop in time. Definitely not gonna have that problem anymore. Now I'm just gonna have to watch my mirrors and make sure I don't get rear ended by the car behind me cause I stopped so fast haha.
Do you feel that you can control the front brakes better? Do they lock up easy, or can you stop quickly where they feel like they're about to lock up (threshold braking) ? I have a problem with the stock '03 calipers locking up without warning under heavy braking.
Seems like all I need is light pressure from two fingers now. This feels like the same braking power that I got from squeezing the lever with full force on my old calipers. So it takes much less effort to stop the same or shorter distance. I'm not sure if I'd be able to lock up these calipers. I took it relatively easy on the brakes seeing as how this was my first ride with them.
Dan if you're in the fence about doing this conversion I'd say just go for it.
I feel like my bike now stops like my old CBR used to. I feel like this is the best upgrade I've done to my ride thus far and without getting too dramatic I'm sure these brakes have to potential to be the difference between life and death.
