The starter on my 99 wg just has a loud click/clunk when I hit the start button. Things I have checked
1.load test on battery-ok
2.sanded & cleaned connections at battery,starter & ground strap.
3.Jumped out solenoid with a wire from grn wire terminal to + on battery.
4.pulled solenoid cover sanded copper contacts.
5.Using mtr- 1 lead to big post on starter and other at battery, when I hit start button, voltage goes to 7v.
6.same process as #5 but put the lead on green wire & hit button-13v.
What do I do now, rebuild starter or replace? If I rebuild it can somebody show me or tell me how?
That drop to 7V could be starter or battery. Don't know if you have an inductive amp meter, would be handy in this instance, though you'd have to look up normal amp draw for a Harley starter. I've had batteries show 13V, drop to 4 or 5 when trying to start, and a new battery was the answer. New batteries ain't cheap, and that's one of the reasons I got a cheap amp meter you just lay on a wire. Used to find them in auto parts stores, and even Sears. Could try jumping it from a car if you don't have another bike battery to try, but those amps in a car battery might melt something if that starter has a short. Post results when you find the answer, might be something new to somebody for future reference.
double check to make sure the two starter mounting bolts are tight. had this happen to my 07 ultra, bolts came lose causing a poor ground to the starter.
update on the starter...pulled it off last night and had it tested today and a solenoid rebuild kit installed in it. Tonight I will try and eliminate connections 1 by 1. Im thinking its the ground cable or power cable...I will update when I get it figured out. Thanks everybody for the replies!!
