here's something that's starting to **** me off...someone posts about something they're having trouble with and asks a question...4 guys pipe up and say "get a manual" Well, no ****, sherlock. If the guy had a manual he wouldn't be asking. He needs help now, not in a week when his manual comes in. If you have no valuable info then don't bother posting your helpful 'get a manual' comment.
This oen has been going on like that for years...So when I post I need help, the first thing I say is a got a manual. I guess I'm exceptionally slow with some things, but it doesn't bother me...
I believe that's covered in the manual too... (lol)
Seriously, it never occured to me to get a manual until somebody said "get a manual". Then, when I did, I never realized how complete was. Even the"simple" stuff has important tips, and the breakouts are invaluable.
So, yeah, it's cool to help people out - but it's probably better to teach folks how to fish, than to simply throw a bass at them when they're hungry
Why not do both in arespectful way? Answer the question immediately and mention the fact that a manual will answer about 90% of your questions in most cases.
i agree that the manual will help these folks out, I guess my point was that, these guys are probably in it to their elbows at the time of asking and they don't have access to a manual...that's why they're asking for help
it just seems like a condescending way to respond to someone's post..."get a manual" but not offer any real help
Agree - I have a manual and there are things that need doin that the manual does not answer - it attempts to answer - but often the simple sketch drawing does not provide the entire "picture".
There are a few things I never would have attempted without the invaluable support of forum members who have gone there before me.
I agree with you haksaw. I have a couple manuals (Harley and Haynes). Most of the time I refer to both of them, but I'm the type that likes to get other guys experience while doing things. And, don't tell me to get a manual unless 1- I didn't state that I had one, and/or 2- you have something constructive to say along with it.
Ibought the 06 Dyna service manual and parts catalog. Something still bothers me about how much the MoCo charges for these things. If someone needs something out of the manual, PM me and I'll scan the necessary pages and email them to you.
Good point, I sometimes tell guys to get a manual because I never knew how helpful the manual is or how easy it was to get one. For exapmle, the service manual for my truck is $135 and is 3 books that come in a box. My dyna manual was $42 from Zanotti's and I got it in 2 days
That said, there is a lot of information NOT spelled out in the manual that I have learned here by asking or searching the tech threads. But if I tell someone to get a manual it's because I can tell by the question they are asking that they can avoid screwing their bike up in the future
