My DWG has always had forward controls. I added mid pegs so I could have foot placement options on long rides. While the change in foot position is a welcomed one at times, I can't imagine trying to ride, shift, and brake from the middle all the time.
6'2" 34" inseam . Had the dealer put on forwards beforeI picked up my BOB. First I sat on a BOB mids then I sat on a wide glide forwards.
That clinched it.
Like others, I had the forwards installed before I picked up my bike (06' Lowrider). I had them save the parts and I used them to install the mid setup I have. I love being able to switch to the mids on longer trips.
Stranger, I thought about forwards for my bike, but I did not like the cover that went over the existing shifter rod. I learned to ride on jap bikes mostly and they were all mids or rears and I felt like it gives me better control (IMO). Like you I am 5'11". However, I do not feel cramped. What I have learned is that having forward footrest, extended out, gives me room to stretch my legs and I can shift positions as I choose while out on the road. Take a look at mine setup and this might be okay for your needs. Cheaper as well. If I go to forwards, I want the Sportster set up. The linkage on a sporty just looks better to me than the long shift linkage of the forwards.
I just had forward controls placed on my bike last week. Rode for 4 weeks with the mid's and knew I had to get the forward controls. I was some what concerned with the not having as much control handling but have found that not to be the case. It is so mucn more comfortable. Well worth the money in my opinion. Cost me $640 at HD
I really recommend doing as you suggested,,'leaving the mids on also' Forwards are a must for me, however it sure is nice to be able to move your feet around on long trips..
Just joined up here, but I figure I'll jump right in. Like several people I had forward controls put on my bike before I took delivery. I'm 6'2" so it was a must for me. However, I just put my mid mount pegs back on. I found that on long trips it would be nice to have another option to move my leg position a little.
Well the purchase of forward control kit was done last night. So this Friday should be a fun filled day, sortof.
Thanks for everyones time to respond, now the fun begins.
