That's how I did mine, too.

I laced them and then paid a dirt bike shop about $60 to true the wheels and mount the tires.

It's Harley's weird 4-over1 pattern that some people fight with.....it just doesn't feel or look right when you first start lacing them.

I just remembered that the last time I laced a wheel, I ran a test (successful) to see if I could replace just one spoke if needed. You could also replace and torque them one at a time. I guess there is no real reason to do all of them at once if the hub and rim will be reused. It may come out as true as it is now.

I too used my forks as a truing stand the first time I did a wheel, but at $29 for the HF truing stand, it was hard to say no to it.

I have relaced wheels in the past, and at least to me this is a tedious and PIA job. A couple years ago I wanted to change the wheels on my Dyna. When I saw what some companies were asking for custom rims, I ruled that out. I decided to powder coat my rims and hubs. The rims were relaced by a local shop. Some of the best money I have ever spent IMHO. You just need to decide whether you want to take the time and care to do the job correctly, and if so, then I'm sure you can do it if you are the least bit mechanically inclined. Good luck.
