I put this in the "General" section because I didn't know where to put it
(My lack of knowledge of what harley goes where is to blame...if it isn't an XL [AKA Sportie] I don't understand)
Locally there is a 2001 HD Wide Glide for sale for what I think is a good price. I will call the owner today to hopefully see the bike. Not being familiar with BT HD what should I look for? Is there anything specific about the Wide glide? What exactly is a Wide glide? Anything specific about the 2001 model to look for?
A WideGlide is of the Dyna family, and is basically a Lowrider with the forks further apart, thus the term WideGlide. It has a 21" front tire instead of the 19" that is on most of the Dynas. It has a rubber mounted engine for vibration isolation. It also has a bobtailed rear fender, unlike the rest of the Dyna Line.
WideGlides are good bikes, and if you like that style and the bike fits you, it could be a good choice. Be careful of "Good Deals". It seems that a lot of people want to sell 3 or 4 year old bikes for 2005 prices.
Bill's right. Most people try to get more than they've got in the bike because it's a Harley. Check the on line Kelley Blue Book price for a good estimate of its value.
The wide glide is a great bike and will give you years of great riding. It has the same front end as several of the Softails and with the rubber mounted engine, it rides quite smooth.
I bought an '04 Wide Glide about a month ago. Had 3,400 miles on it, every upgrade you can imagine, including custom paint, mags, EFI, Leatherworks bags, windshield - the whole bit. I gave $14,900 and I got all the original parts, so if anyone is looking for new '04 fenders, tank, wires, etc. let me know.
I have an 02 wide glide, bought it new and gave 18k. I paid too much but wouldn't do without it. I now have 52k and the only two problems I've had was the stator, 2 weeks old under warranty, no fuss, and the steering head bearings were not adjusted properly, also under warranty. Since then, no problems and being an old racer, I drive it pretty hard but don't abuse it and it gets taken care of, I'm also an ASE master tech so that should explain how it gets taken care of. I am impressed with how trouble free it has been, other than the two warranty deals--jack
I have an '05 WG that I picked up in May and I've put 6500 miles on it. The laid back ride is pisser, and stock it comes with a generous amount of chrome. The seats wicked comfortable too, and the passanger seat and sissy bar is real friendly for the ladies.
I've got a 99 Wideglide with 24000 miles on her and I still love it....I bought a new Deluxe a few months ago and still have the Wideglide. Just can't part with her....By the way the Wideglide is still running strong with no leaks!!!!
I have an 04 Wide Glide and I love it as well. I've done quite a bit to it. Some people would ask why I didn't just get a bagger but I love this bike and yes, I put a lot more into it than needed but it's "my bike" now. The rubber mount motor is one of my favorite things about it. So is the 21" tire even though it can get a little squirrely when I hit those lines or cracks in the freeway. I don't know much about the 01's but I'm sure it's a great bike as long as it was taken care of.
