How do you guys prop up your bikes when you change the engine,primary,transmission oils??? Will a 2x4 under the kickstand stand the bike upright enough to get things done. I dont see a frame jack/lift being usefull since the drain plugs are under there. Any info on how you guys do things would help.
I dont bother using my jackor anything under the jiffy stand. I just change it while its on the jiffy stand. It may leave just a tad bit of fluid in there but not enough to matter and you have to check the fluids on the jiffy stand anyway.
I did use a 2x4 under the kickstand, but was never comfortable with the bike being that close to perpendicular without support. So Ifixed up my own tie-down anchors in my garage floor. I borrowed a friend's hammer drill and bitandinstalled two concrete anchors 5 feet apart.They accept 5/16" eyebolts. Hook the tiedowns to these andthere's no way you can push the cycle over accidentally, or even on purpose! Also, with this arrangement I don't need a special motorcycle jack for changing tires, etc. The tie downs hold the bikewell enough to use a cheap Walmart car floor jack with a piece of 2x4 to lift it. Whenit's not in use,I replace the eyebolts with regular bolts that sit almost flush to the floor so no onetrips over anything. If we ever move, I guess I will fill in the anchors with patching cement. If you want to try this, be sure you have access to a hammer drill. It is almost impossible to drill old concrete without one.
Went out and spent $M on a Handi airlift. Place bike on lift and lock the front tire. Use a scisor jack I got at the junk yard for $5. Lifts up bike while on lift if needed. Rear panel on lift drops out for tire change. You can lay on the floor and bust your a$$ or you can sit in a chair and listen to ZZ Top while you work on your bikes. You have got no idea how easy that made things if you have never worked off a lift. It was better than spending a $M on chrome. When people walk in my garage do you think they notice the chrome or the air lift? When lift is not in use I store my 1974 R75/6 BMW on the lift in the corner. The lift is on casters and has a handle. You can move the lift around with a bike on it. Best grand I ever spent.
I use to use a 4X6 with eyebolts in the end. Roll the front tire in the center of the board and strap it down to the eyebolts. I also had a ramp in the center of the board where the bike would not roll forward or backwards. Thiskeeps the bike upright, tight, and secure. This was many years ago and worked quiet well. It is cheap and so easy to make too. I even still have it after many years and still use it when the lift is occupied by another bike.
