some people like the blacked out look because its harder to point out..so when the authoritys are asking questions the victims just say.. it was a guy on a black bike with a black helmet.. theres 100k of them that way. i have a black bike but the only reason is because i got a screaming deal on it..im looking to trade tins for white. 2000 fxdx perfect condition.
I don't actually think blacked out is a real 'fad', I just think you hear about it a lot on this forum so people think of it as one. I know when I go to any of the 3 dealers in my area I see way, way more bright colors covered in chrome than I do black. Even when I occasionally make the trek to a local bike night most of the bikes are bright and chromed.
Granted, I'm referring to my small section of the world so your mileage may vary. One thing I will say, black is by NO means easy to take care of. It might not be as bad with the denim style paint, but gloss black is a son of a bitch to deal with. It shows every thing imaginable, it smudges like you wouldn't believe, scratches stand out like a sore thumb, etc.

I agree with all of this. When I was in Sturgis this year I only noticed 3 or 4 blacked out Dynas, all of which had quarter fairings. All black bikes really aren't my thing, but some of them unquestionably look bad *** (Toastman's Street Bob comes to mind).
I had my Dyna Painted Black, then I powder coated almost everything I could Black either gloss or wrinkle depending on where, I Love not having to polish anything and how easy it is to clean but Since SOA has become so Popular and Mine is a 01 FXDXT I'm think of painting the tins a contrasting color maybe HOK Tangerine with the ghost Flames in Black? I Have a Complete spare set of tine with the faring so If I don't like it I'm sure someone would pay good money for them
My last bike was chromed out, When I got this Bob, I decided to go to the darkside, but have kept some contrast. I think the blacked out bikes look better.....
