Have the forward controls on my FXDL. Had to get a wide glide outer primary cover in order to eliminate the hole in the FXDL outer primary cover. There is a chrome cap which comes with the kit to cover the splined shaft coming out of the cover but I thought it looked fugly being the only protrusion (kind of like a big zit) from the outer primary cover. You need to remove the inner primary to get the old shift stuff out butI was replacing the inner primary with a chrome one anyway.
I'm doing exactly the same thing on my 06 bob- I'll probably start it this afternoon after the empties are returned (my garage is small and very messy)...
Ironically I just did this, this last weekend. I will be honest and tell you as others have that there are a few "special tools" that you will need. One is a 30mm metric socket (this just bugs the hell out of me, a metric on a Harley, oh well), another is a tool that you insert between the two gears inside the primary case to unbolt one nut on the clutch which is LEFT HAND THREADS, and one bolt that is set to 150 to 165ft lbs that is standard threads. As others have said here, you will need to remove the pimary case, not a very easy job to do if you have not done one to be honest. It can be done, I did it but dam it was an all day job. Parts all fit great, all from Harley. Now for the funny part. I was at home watch a show, either Corbins ride on or V-twin, not sure which one but they showed Kuryakyn (sp?) forward control kit for 2006 dyna and with this kit, you do not need to remove the primary case to do. They put a cap over the splined shaft that sticks out of the case and then they have a special part that attaches to the rod sticking up from the back of the case and it holds the rod to the case. Not as "clean" as the HD kit, and it does cost a bit more, $399.95 or so but dam talk about a time saver. I would bet that you could install Kuryakyns in about 2hours at the most, where as the HD one is an all day event and requires a couple special tools. I like the forwards, I also kept my mid mount pegs just for another place to put my feet on long rides. I wish you best of luck in whichever one you do, both will work about the same, just depends on $ you are willing to spend and time. After you get the special tools for the HD kit, price between the two is about the same.
I did this to my 2000 FXDS during Christmas vac and it was very easy. No special tools. No MM sockets. It sounded like the same kit Stanger talked about except it came from the Harley store. MSRP was $299.95, but I got it for like $240 due to a 20% off Customer Appreciation Day. Our local HD shop has those 3 times a year and I usually wait till one of those 3 times to get a great discount. As much as I love getting good deals via mail order, I also try hard to support my local business's, especially when they offer me 20% off.
Well,. I decided to just save my $250 and install my inner primary and forward controls myself. Well,... Since I had the service manuel the job went fairly smooth. I used an air impact to remove the clutch and engine sproket. I then removed the old innner primary changed all the seals and then reinstalled everything per the directions of the forward controls and the service manuel. I got it all back togeather and adjusted all the linkages and came across one problem. There is a defect in my outter primary that wont allow the little chrome cap to snap into the hole left by the old shifter shaft. I then compared my new chrome outter primaryto my old factory outter primary cover and it was obvious that there is a sleve inside thaat hole left by the old shifter shaftthat is supposed to come right out to the outter lip of the primary coverso the chromehole plugcan attach butthe sleveis counter sunk appx 1/4 inch which prevents the chrome plug from attaching. I tried everything that I could think of to get the sleve to move out some and nothing works. It really dont affect anything mechanically,... except I just dont want a hole there considering how much $$$ I have invested in all of this stuff. I'm gonna give Zanottis a call and see if they will do a part warranty and send me a new one.
I got this same H-D forward control conversion kit and had the dealer installit for me. I had planned on installing it myself. I remember reading in the Easyriders tech tips books that it wasn't all that difficult. Then I bought this '06 and got the Service Manual for it too. After reading the instructions and seeing that they said you had to remove the inner primary to seal that shifter hole I decided to part with the cash and let the dealer do it. Just like it was mentioned earlier in this post, I wasn't wanting to risk getting screwed on my warranty by tearing the covers off myself. You never know whata dealer will do when presented with the opportunity to either spend money or make money.
Anyway, after buying this over priced kit I noticed one thing right off the bat. The controls themselves are not worth the time and money spent on the kit and the install. You get to use your old shifter and then they include a stamped piece of pig iron with a bad coat of chrome and call it a foot brake lever. What's even uglier is the off center rubber padwith the huge bolt end running out of the bottom of the pad/lever.
I thought about replacing both levers and checked the H-D catalog. The billet shifter is $80 and the billet brake lever is $160. Anyone know of any options that look as good but cost a little less?
I've done inner primary's a few times and the time spent on that job just 'aint worth it for a simple 45 minute forward control install. I just put a chrome cap on the stock shifter mid shaft and called it wonderful.
Metric sockets are easy to find up here... I already have 'em. As far as the sprocket locking tool; anybody know of a work-around? I was going to make my own out of stainless... looks like it needs to be 7...71/2 maybe inches long.
As others here have stated, you can do this job without ever removing the primary cover. Just put a small cap over the splined rod sticking out of the primary cover and well lodge or wedge the linkage in the back of the primary cover. I thought about doing just this, but then I wanted a very clean look and I do not want some cap sticking out of the primary case this is why I went ahead and did the full removal of the case. Good luck with whatever you choose.
