My local tuner averages 50 dyno pulls while tuning a bike. He charges $360 for a tune and it is perfect. People drive hundreds of miles to have him tune their bikes and every dealer, other than the local HD stealer, and engine builder in the area uses him. I doubt they will go to the same extent he does, as tuning is all he does. Here's a link to his site. http://smctuning.com/Home_Page.html He has some good info there and his pricing is listed as well.

Re-reading your first post, the pricing difference tells me that for $300 they load a "canned" tune for stage 1 and do a dyno pull. For $500 they use their "canned" tune a tweak some stuff.

I'm kinda thinking the same thing...many dyno tuners load in a canned map and then check it on the dyno. Whoever does it make sure the are developing a custom map for your actual bike...not one like yours.

See that worries me cause they claim that they do not use the canned maps at all and that's part of the reason for the costs. The difference between the 300 and 500 they claim when I asked them is the amount of timing dynoing and adjusting is higher with a cam than with a stage one tune. I guess I just want to get what I am paying for basically. I could post up my prev dunno tune sheet to criticize the time possibly or praise it. The curve is awesome three numbers are high which they addressed since fourth.

How would one really know? They could say whatever they want really.

Most people are honest. If you talk to the operator you will know....someone on here wrote "10 questions to ask your dyno tuner" You could check into that thread

You could hang out while they do it. If they actually spend 4 hours making pulls an doing adjustments I would be surprised. Very few dealers, dispite the "authorized tuning center" claims, actually tune bikes effectively. Do some research and then ask specific questions about what parameters they need to adjust differently with the cam swap. A/F ratios and timing need to be adjusted regrdless of the mods so I dont see how they are charging differently unless they short change the stage 1 tune. There is also a tuning section on this forum that has some great info and people way smarter than me on fuel injection. I pay Rich Sterns at SMT to do my stuff for a reason.

Yes, the PV has auto tune capability.

I still think the $500 is too much for a tune. The local shop here is 3 - 4 hours at $75 per hour.
