Funny you ask this question today, today I raised my bike to clean the back wheel, to my surprise the wheel was moving from side to side, then I noticed the axle nut was not very tight, so I tighten it take it for a test ride and blew both wheel bearings, loud screeching sound and rear end was wobbly, took the wheel off brought it to the dealer to replace the bearings, and these were done just last summer, anyway the dealer tells me I was lucky as there was no spacer between the bearings and that was the reason for the early failure of the bearings, 1 hour before I was running 140kmh and started to hear the screeching. So do you need the spacer between the bearings Hell yes.
