My question is this .. Had my rear wheel bearings and spacer replaced today. Now the spacer has a good amount of play between the bearings maybe 1/8 inch. It also has up and down play within the bore.? Seems wrong to me.
It's normal. Don't worry about it.
The only job that spacer has to do is keep the two wheel bearings apart. It won't move around after you put the axle back in.

Up and down play in the spacer is normal, without the axle in place. The axle is what keeps it centered.
If there's an 1/8 inch end play, either the bearings weren't installed correctly, or the spacer is the wrong size. You're looking at a high probability of really fast bearing failure.

O6 fxdli. And nope its not installed just sitting on my bench. Like I said before the spacer that was in there was TIGHT to the bearings and the bore. No play whatsoever.

This statement is very wrong.
The bearings should be pressed in until they bottom out on the stepped bore of the hub. The design of the bores in the hub keeps the bearings apart not the spacer.....
When they are fitted correctly the inner races should contact the spacer.
If the inner races and spacer aren't contacting before the axle is fitted there will be too much side load on the bearings once the axle is tightened and as stated in the posts above, you will get premature bearing failure
