Mine is so tight in my oil tank I have to put a rag over it and work it out with a pair of channel lock pliers, when I do checks and oil changes. Once I've worked it out the first time, I can get it out by hand, until the next time.
Firstly, thanks for the helpful replies. It actually had occurred to me to try and pull it out, but tugging pretty hard didn't do the trick, so I thought I'd come ask somebody before I started yanking on it with tools. I finally did get it out, but it was so firmly wedged that the cosmetic chrome top came off of the rubber body, which was still lodged in the case. But, thanks to the helpful replies, I felt comfortable prying it out since I knew it was a pop-off sort of arrangement. Now all is well.

I've learned a few things over the course of my life, one of the most valuable is: if you don't know, ask. Another one (which might be helpful for you) is: be careful when you set out to mock someone because you might wind up looking like the fool you suppose your target to be. I didn't know how to remove a dipstick; you didn't know how to act like a decent human being. Which one of us is more ignorant?
Ok, we have a Dyna guy helping a another Dyna guy out with his first post and then a Softtail guy comes in with a grenade - there is going to be injuries!
At least I'm trying to help the op instead of being an a$$hole like other people here
BTW apex predator, welcome to hdforums and the Dyna area especially! Your a hit already, and I bet there is nobody here that has not scratched their head at sometime or another on something like your dipstick problem.
Hi all, I have an 05 FXDCI and I can't for the life of me remove the f'n dipstick. I bought the bike used, but I assume it is the stock dipstick. It is chrome with a knurled edge and when I attempt to unscrew it the cap simply spins freely in both directions. It doesn't get tighter or more loose, and it honestly doesn't feel as though it is threaded into anything at all, if anything it feels like it is seated in a very firm rubber mount. Am I just a moron who doesn't know how to unscrew his oil filler cap?
Welcome to the forum. I too am a relatively new Harley owner and struggled with the dipstick removal at first. I too have found a lot of help on this forum - there are a lot of good people with good advice. But at the same time have found too many ********. Guess it goes with the territory. I used to be a member of the Honda Hawk forum and it was totally different. Remember the slogan "You meet the nicest people on a Honda"?
