I know that there have been hundreds of discussions on seats but that presents another unique problem...a lot of outstanding information and good opinions, but none that I can find that are specific to my question: I need a touring style 2-up seat for my '01 SG but the options seem to be very limited for this model. Also, my budget for another seat is pretty tight and I cannot afford a $550 seat right now.
I think I have it narrowed down to a Mustang Wide Vintage 1-Piece Touring Seat pn 75536 that are available for right at $400, delivered. I read a lot of really good things about the Mustang seats here but they are expensive. Also, there does not seem to be any way for me to check out one before purchase and I really cannot afford to buy one only to find out that it does not work for me.
Then there is the HD Sundowner Deep Bucket pn 51540-01A for about $300 from my local dealer. My local dealer did tell me that I could put it on and ride it around for the rest of the day and they would take it back if I didn't like it.
I would like to know if anyone here has any experience with both of these seats. Is the Mustang seat worth the extra $100 over the Sundowner Deep Bucket, is the Sundowner seat a comfortable seat for long rides, or are they pretty much the same as far as comfort goes?
Finally, I am trying to avoid getting a seat that will move me further forward than the OEM seat I already have. Will either or both of these seats move me back further or keep me positioned the same?
I am going to wait for your opinions before making a decision. Thanks in advance for your replies.
I have the Mustang wide touring solo. There are others besides those two. I would take the dealer up on his offer of trying it out for the day. That would narrow it down if you don`t like it. Really don`t know how you would "try out" the Mustang unless you have a buddy
Can't help you with the trying out part, but I can tell you that I had the Mustang wide vintage touring on my Sporty and liked it so much that I bought one for my 08 FXDC. I don't think that you can find better quality anywhere. Good luck!
I also have the Mustang wide vintage touring seat and love it . My old stock seat hurt my back it only took 20 miles or so and it hurt . With the Mustang seat I can ride all day .
Never had a Mustang seat, but had a Sundowner on my Sportster, it was such a great seat, when I bought my WG, a Sundowner was the first mod. Its a great seat for long distance riding, and your backseat will love the comfort.
Thanks for the replies! I found out today that I can use the $75 dealer credit I have accumulated toward the purchase of the Sundowner seat. That brought the price down to $243.55 and I can still try it out for the day. That pretty much makes the decision easy for now.
I do not doubt that the Mustang Wide Vintage is a good seat, I guess I was trying to find out if anyone had any experience with both seats and whether they thought the Sundowner was at least as good as the Mustang for comfort on long rides.
Skinman, you'll not be disappointed in a sundowner. I can ride from fuel stop to fuel stop, without having to stop. Plus anyone who ever rode on the back, really loves it.
I finally got to see and sit on a Sundowner, and I honestly could not tell any significant difference between it and the one on my ride. They even looked the same. So, I ordered the Mustang Wide Vintage seat. Two Guys had the best price by about $20 at $347 shipped. It came yesterday, I am installing it this morning and then going on a 2 hour ride. I'll let you know how it goes.
