I hate to break it to you, but you'd be fine with the throw unders. I'm only 5'7" and mine don't get in the way at all because the give when you put your feet down since they aren't bolted to the boxes. They just slide back a little.

I can stuff my thin summer hoodie in there but it's tight. A hoodie made from regular sweatshirt material won't fit. They will hold a pair of rain gloves and an extra pair of safety glasses.
