Update -6/22:

Finally got a chance to spend some time on the bike. Got the tank off, and all chrome crap that I wanna powder coat. I cussed a lot, broke some tools, and threw **** all over my garage. I don't know wtf happened, but I swear some of the bolts were welded in. Still can't get one of the bolts out from the right side footpeg/break lever. I don't have a torch, so I can't heat it up. That damn star bolt ruined 2 of my star bits. Gonna try to find one for my impact wrench and try that. Otherwise, that ***** gonna get spray painted in place. :O

I guess I'll spend all day tomorrow cleaning my garage, so I can find all the **** that I pulled off the bike, and head to the powder coater monday or tuesday...

I will also be replacing a shitload of nuts, bolts, and fasteners. The bike is only 11 years old, but some of the stuff I took off was in pretty bad shape, worse than it should be. My last one was an '03, and it was near mint.

Hi Andrew,
I've been calling a few powder coaters this morning to start lining things up...I tell ya, its a mixed bag with some of the shops around here, LOL.

One powder coater doesn't even powder the gas tank, and wanted to charge me $225 to powder the 2 wheels

I think I found who I'm gonna use. He also rides, so I feel good about giving him my business. He estimated $125 to powder the tank, and $50-75 to powder the rear fender. Wheels will be $140 for the pair. He can dismount the tires, remount and balance for $20 total per wheel. This will save me a trip to a bike shop to do that for me

Based on his reasonable prices on the tank, fender and wheels, I may be able to powder every damn thing and stay within budget. Gonna drop off the first batch of stuff later this week or Saturday. After I get everything with the 1st batch done done, gonna put the bike together and get it off the jack. Gonna drain all fluids, then remove the rest of the crap for powder (outer primary, trans cover, cam cover, etc.)

That seems like a steal. I know someone locally who had tank and two fenders coated for around $600 total. I am trying to get as many wrinkle-black parts as possible to prevent myself from having to spend more powdercoating existing parts, if I'm just going for the blacked-out look.

Have you considered changing out your center console to allow for the tank lift? I think the newer consoles lay flatter to the tank, but I can't tell just from the pictures.

I really didn't even think about that...I already ordered a new black dash panel, so I think I'll roll with that for a while. I'll recheck the clearance before I pull the tank off...if I recall, the top tree was hitting the gas tank before hitting the steering stop when I lifted the tank up. I could fix the handlebars hitting the dash with different risers, but I can't think of a solution to keep the top tree from hitting the tank, unless I reduce the turn radius, by somehow moving the steering stops closer...these trees are much beefier than the stock ones.

No significant updates. I've been shopping around some powder coaters locally, and I think I found my guy. I'll be dropping everything off next wednesday. I met someone who can vouch for his work.

He will blast and coat everything (gas tank, rear fender, all chrome take offs, both wheels, handlebars) for $800-900. I haven't had a chance to modify my front fender to fit yet, so I'll powder that later.

I'll update this thread in a couple weeks when the powder is done. In the mean time, I'm going to work on cleaning the bike up while its nekked...

Finally got the powder stuff back! Gonna start putting this thing together this weekend. The below picture is $700 worth of powder coating. Everything turned out perfect. I went with a satin black on everything. For the wheels, I'm going with a textured red.

The spoke wheels should be ready in about a week. I told him to take his time on everything because its been a long, hot, wet summer, and I didn't feel like sweating my *** off in the garage putting this crap back together. Starting to cool down now, so hopefully be on 2 wheels again in about 3 weeks, just in time for comfortable riding season down here in florida.
