I have an 03 WG and was wondering if anyone has used one of those thumb paddles that connect to the throttle friction screw for a cruise control? It looks like it should work but I thought I would ask here first. Also, is there a good way to smooth out the throttle friction shoe so that it is more precise when tightening. Mine is very inconsistent and kinda hit and miss or “grabby” when tightening it. It’s not smooth and precise at all. I have a service manual but is doesn’t show the brass shoe portion of the friction screw. Thanks for any advise. BB
Unfortunately, they do not work very consistently. That is my experience. I don't think they have changed the design ever. I feel they are dangerous, but that is my opinion.
I have one and hardly ever use it. It will never hold you at a constant speed. Its nice every once and awhile to give your right hand a rest but wouldn't use it for more than a couple of miles or so.
I have an 03 FXD with the standard star nut on the throttle. I like it on long rides. I don't tighten it all the way though, this way I don't have to hold the grip to tightly, and if I have to throttle down, I can. Just my .02

They do say that you are to set it so that it just holds the throttle at the desired setting but not so tight that you can’t override it if necessary. BB
You would probably do better with the 'palm paddle' sort that clamps to the grip. These don't lock the throttle open like the cruise control devices, but they give you more leverage and you can open your hand and wiggle your fingers without losing speed.
Got an 02 RK, and have the palm paddle on it. I suppose the star lock would work, but you need to live in those areas where you can watch your dog run away for 3 days before it'll keep your speed consistent.
they didn't feel right to me, was a bit awkard to use. I added the Kury throttel boss to my Kury grips. You don't even know its there, it works so great. other than a real cruise control, the kury throttle boss is the only way to go.
