Default Removing inner primary (06 FXDLI)

At the end of the season I am planning on replacing my chrome outer primary with a black outer primary cover, as well as installing forward controls and doing full removal of the mid controls (shaft and all) on my 06 Low Rider (FXDLI).

I've been trying to find videos or pictures of the removal of the inner primary cover, I have the manual and feel relatively comfortable with the process.

I'm just looking for some tips from anyone out there who has actually removed their full primary chain casing, and things I should look out for.

While I have it open should I plan on replacing anything other than gaskets? I'm planning on using all hand tools, any special tools required?

I put forward controls on 08 fxdc about 4 yrs. ago. You will need a primary locking tool, (1/4" piece of flat bar, 1" wide x 7 1/4" long). Also, a torque wrench that works in the counterclockwise direction, (I think 70ft/lbs) and a 30mm socket for the clutch pack.
Use all gaskets and new bolts that come with kit. Don't forget the tower gasket. It goes between the post where mid control lever goes through. Unless you go with new inter and outer primary. ie.. wide glide witch has no pass through
I assume you read up on IPB and stator problems with 06 dynas. If not, do a search. There's much to read.
Follow directions and service manual closely. It's not that hard. It does take some time. Good luck

If you are careful and patent type you can do that with out removing the inner primary case. You can get behind the case and cut the shaft off then pull it out and take the other end of the shaft and do the same. In this manner you simply remove the outer case is all. No special wrenches etc just a sawz all blade and a way to hold the blade. And about a hour of cussing and beer and you have it.

I used this when I put in my Baker IPB. I highly suggest you do the same while you have everything apart. Good luck.

That is the exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

I'm on the fence about sawing the original, I think I'm going to install the forwards and let it stay in tucked until I make up my mind on keeping them. The cover is being replaced either way, thanks for all the tips.

So I went ahead and installed the forward controls to see how I would like them. All told took me about an hour. Still have to break them in to see how they feel and get used to them. It's nice having the day off.
