I used an Allen... Didn't look like an Allen last night in the dim light.

Another couple things... Both my tranny and primary drain plugs had a little bit of shavings on them. Its not a whole lot, and I assume its from break in on a new bike. I'm not really worried at all, just checking...

But, I added 3 QTS of oil, but only drained 1.5 QTS out... That seems really odd.

My hands are too big to turn the filter off... Had to hammer a screw driver through it...

did my oil change last week on my '11 SuperGlide, so identical to yours down there.
I also thought the 3/8 socket wouldn't fit, instead it does. Just angle it a bit and it will go on, alternatively, first put just the socket on the bolt and then the extension to the wrench, no need to remove the rubber thing.

did you drain it cold or hot?

Also you should have bought a manual don't understand why you put 3qt when you should have only put 2,5qt. you'll be sorry as your oil will come out the A/C and make a mess. Did you check the level after you put it in?

Usually when you drain it, you drain less than you put in because some oil is inside the filter absorbed by the element, some you inevitably spill when you remove the oil filter.

Also, hammering a screw driver in the filter, may work but you risk damaging the tread of the filter mount. Do yourself a favour buy a proper air filter removal socket, you should get it for less than 10 bucks.

Also shavings are normal... it depends how much of it you find. I found a tiny amount on the engine oil' plug, quite a bit on the primary, a bit less than that in the tranny.

For this reason I'll probably change those oil again in 5000 mi, maybe 7500mi

Only put in as much as you drained out or you are going to have a big problem. I always run the bike and heat up the oil really good before I drain it and I never get all three quarts out. Usually two and a half with a half quart staying in the engine. My advice to you would be to drain out a quart and a half and run the engine until hot and start all over again.

That factory installed oil filter was hard to remove on my 1K service. Thats why I use a K&N filter with the 17mm nut on the end of the filter. I also use the HD oil change funnel. Put it under the filter, poke a small hole in the bottom and top of the filter. Let the filter drain into the funnel which drains into the pan. The funnel Really does not let any oil drain onto the engine when changing the filter.
