Default Do I need a Tuner

I have a 2013 Dyna Super Glide. I am wanting to put a Vance & Hines 2 to 1 full exhaust, and n aftermarket Air cleaner. I have talked to 4 different HD dealers and 2 have said I have to add a tuner and 2 say just need mine programed and no need for extra tuner. They say it is just the shops wanting more money. I need to know what I need to do this right.

Also I'm not set on air cleaner, but am looking at the Kuryakyn mach 2
Harley shop says Harley heavy breather.

Does anyone have any advice on these or different air cleaners.

I wouldn't pay anything for the harley download. It depends how good you want your bike to run...tuner is the best way to go. You'll get 100 different opinions on which one. Do the research and figure out whats best for you.

A/C's pretty much perform the same way...pick one you like the looks of

Very debatable question battled over several forums. Most people and shops/tuners will recommend a tuning device and custom map made for the pipe and cleaner. Thats the ideal way to go for optimum performance out of the stage one you're doing. The download flash the other dealer suggests is cheaper, less spot on tune but fine for most. Other option is bolt it all on, leave the ecm alone and let it adjust itself the VERY little it can in the air/fuel ratio department resulting in too lean for my taste mixture but not to far off from stock set up, it can be done without engine damage no matter what anyone tells you.
Take your pic of choices, each changes the price but so does the performance.

And as far as air cleaners go, get the one you like looks of best because all open air cleaners flow more than enough to support any combo of motor. Big inch builds different story.

Good rule of thumb:

- One performance mod = OK
- More than one performance mod = Tune

You're doing two mods so will want some type of tune (recommend aftermarket). If I had to choose between the listed breathers (Kur"Crap"yan vs. HD HB) - it would be HD.

As I am sure most of us have, I went through the same thing you are going through. I ended up going with the Power Commander, I wish I would have went with another route due to the fact that there are not a whole lot of Maps available, the customer service is outstanding though. I rode for a while with a map that was made for a stock set up, couldn't even tell the difference really. I have v&h short shots and a screaming eagle round air intake, nothing to write home to mom about due to the fact that short shots are by far from a performance exhaust, I liked it better with my slip-ons. Whatever you decide, I would pay no attention to price, and just wait until the particular mod is in your budget.

Harley is ALWAYS going to push their own product. This must be your first Harley or you'd already know this.

Download is absolute crap that just brings your bike back to the same lean condition that it was in stock. if you want cheap and effective go with Xied's, if you want flexibility and the best tune possible go with a flash tuner, TTS and Power Vision are the ones I'd recommend. Either one can be used to get a pretty decent street tune or you can have the bike dyno tuned with either. If you are going the dyno tune route then get whatever the tuner recommends and is familiar with.

I'm getting ready to go the stage 1 route and was seriously considering the Cobra fi2000 CVT auto tuner. This thing plugs into your fuel injectors and o2 sensors and adjust fuel accordingly or so the manufacturer states. No matter what you do, cams, breather, big bore, exhaust, Cobra states the fi2000 CVT will do it automagically.

I spoke with the parts folks at my local dealer to ask if they sold the Cobra or have heard any good or bad. They didn't know much about it and immediately tried to sell me the SE street tuner. But they made a good point in doing it. They said your bike is new, you break down and get a tow to the nearest dealer, they wont be able to work with the Cobra.

I forget what the exact model the the SE product was but it had the ability to upload different maps and fine tune more aspects of the ECM than comparably priced options. Talk to your dealer. I will most likely go with the HD SE tuner since my bike is new.
