I am baffled so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a 1992 FXDC and she decided to stop running on the way home. Was making a weird sound like a very fast lifter tick and it started after a 200 mile ride. Stopped to eat and came out to leave and the noise started, didn't make a peep before this. Made a pop like I forgot to turn the fuel on (which was on) and then wouldn't start.
It has good spark, is getting gas to the cylinders, compression is 100 on both cylinders, push rods are moving ( just something I checked) put in new plugs, battery is full charge and oil is good.
When the plugs are in it turns over about 5 or 6 times then a clunk sound. When the plugs are out it turns over no clunking sounds and goes till you let off the starter button.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking
The only difference with or without plugs installed is the compression...since you said that the push rods are moving and described what sounded to you like a lifter tic before failure, I would be looking at the top-end. The rods may be moving but are all of the valves cycling? You would still have cylinder compression with an intake or exhaust valve(s) failed closed. If the exhaust valve(s) is/are sticking, you may be experiencing compression lock in the cylinder which may explain the 5-turns and clunk. There is a lot of fuel/air mixture trapped in the cylinder after 5 cycles if the exhaust valve is not opening...
Good luck and let us know what you find...

Up date - Got into the engine after checking out the electrical system. Looked like my ign pick up in the nose cone was bad so i replaced that. still didn't work. Took the nose cone off to look at the timing and thats when we seen it. I sheared the key on the Pinion gear. cleaned everything out, checked all the gears, cleaned and inpsected cam, replaced key, put all back together and fired her up. Runs like a dream again.
