The stock baffles that I replaced were the normal cheese grater type, about double the length of the BCT.
The quiet baffles installed now are very different. They have a solid washer in the center blocking all the straight-through exhaust. You can't see through them at all. They're longer, with round holes in the tapered part. Picture a longer BCT, drilled full of holes, but with the washer blocking the whole tube.
Neither are wrapped with any kind of packing.
One of my riding friends has an '01 Softtail with stock pipes, baffles drilled a little, and it's really deep but quieter. Does the deepness come from the large interior of the stock mufflers, versus the smaller diameter of my pipes?
I was wondering about welding a bolt/washer lollipop to the inside end of the stock baffles. Wouldn't that be the same as adding a BCT and cutting the stock baffle in half?

I can vouch for the improved sound from DK's Thunder Torque Inserts. I put one at the end of the baffle in my 2-1, and the sound got much lower and "growlier."
In my experience, a deeper tone is the result of more exhaust system volume, which slows down the exhaust flow through the mufflers. My exhaust is a 2 into 1 but them splits into 2 mufflers equally. This results in a nice deep tone. If I close off one of the mufflers, the deep tone completely dissapears and it sounds like crap.
Those DK Thunder Torque Inserts are a real nice tuning aid. Having the sizes, the hardware, mounting etc... all figured out for you they are at an excellent price!
In the 80's there was not much available in aftermarket exhausts... we used to use something similar to get the drag-pipes to perform like and exhaust.
larger diameter pipes give a deeper note as the volume of the pipe is larger and the gas speed correspondingly slower, hence the deeper note
however flip side is unless you are using very high revs that necessitate use of large diameter pipes to get rid of exhaust gases or you have a huge motor the reduction is exhaust gas speed will not allow the motor to scavenge properly and you will probably lose power
There is a very good reason that most hd pipes are 1 3/4" diameter and not 2",its not because they sound or look better better, its because they produce more power
Your choice but I'd be looking for maximum efficiency and power over a deep exhaust note, the bike at the front of the pack always sounds better than the one at the back
