I would do a leak down and compression test to check if its your rings or valves.
then I would pop the rocker covers and check for cracked or missing valve train components. If it looks good fire it up with the covers off and see if you can pinpoint the noise. if you cant find the noise in the heads pull the plug for the crank case and if more than 8oz comes out you have an oil scavaging problem and theres an issue in your pump. hopefully this helps.
well when i change the oil and primary fluid this weekend ill be checking both for any excessive metal. but one thing that came to mind is that ive rode with a half helmet since day but just recently switched to a full face and ive since noticed the noise. before was just wind noise. could be its fine and i can just hear now because of the full face?
My bike has 18K on it. Rattles like an eskimos teeth. Been doing it since new. Especially when oil is hot. Mobil 1 oil is the worst for noise. I been running amsoil this season and helps some. When I did my cams I came thru the top so got a good look at the heads and all was ok. You make a good point if I want to really hear my bike I ride with my full face helmet other wise i ride without.
did the service this weekend. when i drained the primary there was some questionable shavings on the magnet. pulled the primary cover and did a full inspetion and everything was fine. no abnormal wear anywhere, no chunks missing anywhere. checked all fasteners while in there and everything was fine. probably just leftover from break-in is what im assuming. i also changed the exhaust gaskets thinking one might have been leaking and nothing changed. still got noise. so this morning i stuck my head down by the heads while warming it up and noticed the noise was coming from the front. when i had the pipe off i noticed the front seems to be running leaner than the back. ill post the pics i took when i get home. could a lean condition be causing the noise?
my 2004 Road King does the same thing and 1 head runs a little leaner than the other the front head runs Leaner then the back head is a little richer for help cooling the rear head. my dealer and my Indy says this is true to help keep the rear head colour it runs richerI have 45 thousand miles on bike now no problems no worries throttle on brother
