Default Dressing up my primary cover

So I decided I want to have more than just the stock black primary cover but I don't want to buy any expensive replacement. I bought a stock take off for pretty cheap here and figured I'd just polish it, but I can't leave anything alone so I have decided to learn how to engrave metal.

I figure I'm pretty much an autodidact with everything else I do so it shouldn't be too hard. I have been learning about tools and techniques and have decided to use a combination of a rotary tool and a palm grave. I'm gonna make my own tools for the most part.

First thing I did was to take the black off with a gel paint remover. I tried to draw out my design but it just doesn't show too well so I sprayed it with primer. I kinda want the cover to look like an open primary and plan on not getting too elaborate since this will be my first attempt.

Here is my start. I figure I'll use the rotary tool for the bulk of it all and use the palm grave for the detail work. Basically learning how to work the graves. Here is my start showing my beginning cuts and layout.

The front of it I cut out a row of ridges for lack of a better word. I figure I'll fill in this area with paint and wipe it off to give it some shadow and depth. I think it has come out rather well so far.

Looks cool.....did you draw the pattern with a marker or wax pencil first? I wonder if you powder coated over it after you're done if you could still see the pattern? I think it would fill in the small grooves you may not want anyone to see. Did you use any tricks to support your hand to keep it steady?

I used a soft pencil to draw the pattern. As for keeping my hand straight, the biggest thing you have to worry with is the torque of the bit on the metal trying to drag the bit off of the line. You just have to go slow and careful.

As for the powder coating, I want polished aluminum and not all black. Kinda the point of it. I do plan on filling the lines and fields that I cut out with a black enamel, but just for contrast against the shiny polished aluminum.
