Default Road Rash prevention

Hey guys,
I just traded up from the crotch-rocket world to a new '13 WG (!!!!!!!) and have a question- When some douchy motorist forces you to lay a street bike down, you can protect it from a ton of damage by use of frame sliders. Can you do the same with Harleys? Do those bars that I've seen people have forward footrests on serve that purpose, ...and if so, what the hell are they actually called so I can find a set for my WG?

Hopefully you will keep the bike upright, because the coefficient of friction of rubber on asphalt is much greater than the coefficient of friction of metal (as a rule) on asphalt. Translation-you can stop faster and shorter if you DON'T lay the bike down. ABS brakes can help in this regard, but are not essential. That said, you can buy engine guards for your FXDWG and highway pegs. Try page 160 in the 2013 MoCo catalog.

And welcome and congratulations on your WG!!

Engine guards and bag guards. Won't help much in a crash. They'll give the rider a little more time to move a leg. They will protect most parts in case of a tip over.

they can indeed save alot of damage, both personal and bike damage, but have a look at a few bikes with them on first, so you will have an idea what they look likeon your ride.

If you have to lay the bike down or if you just plain lose control, screw the bike protect yourself as best you can. That is what insurance is for. Those bars you are asking about are engine guards also known as highway bars. They won't help the bike much if you go down while moving.

ok, you should have introduced yourself formally on your first post, but since you are a converted ex-ricerocket guy, we might be willing to be a little forgiving this time.

Enginebars/crash bars is what you are looking for. Better still, learn that Harleys don't break like you previous Yamazuki, the just... slow down.

So just take it a little easy and you'll be fine, always better not to lay it down in the first place.

All good info, and much appreciated. I'll give them a look, and go from there. Thanks again.

... And I would have introduced myself, but as a former ricer I feel too humbled to step into the light just yet
