Default Those who have removed the engine guards

I have been seeing these Street Glides with the engine guards removed. I really like the look, but wonder how do you guys stretch out? The only reason I still have mine on is because they are mounting my highway pegs. I find I use the pegs a lot because I like the riding position it gives me. So what are you guys using? I also thought about dumping the floorboards and going with pegs.

just going to say the same thing about putting her on her side. no guards, you can bet you are going to be in the hole at least a few hundred.

i know, i know, "i dont intend on putting her on her side." who does?

i was working on my scooter in my garage and i was chagning out the jiffy stand. i had my 19 yr old kid hold my scoot up. he started looking at what i was doing, 900 pounds wont stand on it's own. i watched in slow motion my baby go over to her side. kid ran in the house scared out of his mind. the guard protected the saddle bags and the batwing. one tiny little scratch on the guard, which you can only see if you are laying on the ground looking up.

I just slide my feet forward on the footpads.

But then, I'm 5'8", so that gives me all the stretch I need. If you're taller, that might not be enough.

You really like the look now that she's all nice and shiny, but one little slip, and I guarantee you're not gonna like the look.
In 8 yrs, I laid my Fatboy over twice. Both times at very slow speed. I was lucky. Mirror took the hit both times.
My RKC, they stay on. 800+ pounds can do a lot of damage to your leg.

Personal choice.....Tourings are the only ones that come with them standard.

Some people like them, some don't.
I don't.
Would they protect the bike a bit if/when it gets laid down, yes.
But if it bugs the crap out of me every time I look and/or ride the bike, then they gotta go.

Just like windshields: Would a taller one keep the wind out of my face? Yes, but I don't like them, so I stay with the little SG deflector.

The question wasn't whether he should take the bar off, but how to extend his feet and/or do highway pegs without it.

I didnt see where you asked how safe it is to take them off so I will leave those comments to myself. As Gruamach just said I'm only 5'8" and I couldnt reach my bars comfortably anyway... however check out Fatbaggers.com They have floorboards that have a rotating peg so that you can move your feet out and forward... they call them Jack-Knifes.

Well, I've slow speed fell over about 3 times now. I know I must be a shitty rider... ha ha But it keeps 'er from falling on the bags. I was cut off or whatever the dreaded left hand in front of you cager move is called.

I was riding in the right lane, as cars in the left were turning left at a light. BUDDY in the oncoming left lane pulls out -maybe- 50 ft in front of me. I wished I has ABS, and would get it next bike. Locked up the front tire, and down she went. I guess I was in a 'panic' mode.

Tumbled, and walked away with a sore butt, as I slammed down on my left side pretty good. Good bruising.

Oh BUDDY BOLTED!! And some cool chick pulls up beside me quickly, and said "I'll go get 'em!!" That was funny, as she wailed like a cop after the guy.

Anyhow, my bike still has a scratched engine guard, and a little scratch on the primary cover, and touch up love on the saddle bag. I have the black HD exhaust covers, and a Sharpie pen did a good touch up.

Ride safe, and if you don't want engine guards ya, it looks cool, maybe consider the mustache ones? I mounted the aux lights on mine, so for now she stays...

Thanks. Those jac knifes look pretty slick.

I am well aware of what the bar does and appreciate all the concerns.

I took mine off the day after I picked up the bike. I don't like 'em either. I too have long legs and might be interested in those jack knifes. Stretching out a little more would be nice, but I absolutely love the look sans engine guard...
