Not sure if you are capable to work on it, but it's a simple matter to roll the exhaust shield around and remove that cam galley cover. About $225 in parts. You do not even need any special tools for that side. That is if it's the tensioners. Sounds like to me the exhaust baffle has gotten loose to me. Can you still hear that when you take a couple heavy rags and muffle the exhaust? It's the tensioners went to the pin, with a stethoscope on that cover, you will hear a fast tap as the links go by hitting the pin. That is enough miles to get a tensioner. Should be no more then $450 from a non dealer.

What are they quoting you for $1500??? In April, I had the stator, voltage regulator, IPB, as well as my cam chain tensioners in my '01 SG replaced by a local HD dealer for $940.79 total, including parts and labor. The tensioners replacement alone was less than $500.

Yeah..I agree...$1500 for cam chain tensioners? For that much you should be able to put in new Gear drive cams/lifters

The $1500 was for replacing the tensioners with Cam's, I haven't taken it in yet, so there are still quite a lot unknown. I may take the cam cover off on Saturday and take a look, and tow it over to them on Monday. I would be ok without an upgrade and just replacing the tensioners.

It was the cam chain tensioner, the outer tensioner blew. Converted to the SE hydraulic tensioners with new oil pump etc. $573 in parts, and $378 in labor @ HWY 66 Choppers in Montclair CA. Took it in on Monday and picked it up today.
