Hey guys looking at a FLD probably getting one in the spring. Anyways just got back from the dealer, talked with one of their service techs about a heel toe shift setup. He was thinking that the shaft from a Heritage would interchange making it possible to then use a shifter from a soft-tail model. He sounded pretty confident about it but wasn't 100%. Is anyone able to confirm this? Has the aftermarket come out with something for the Switchback yet? I seen in the other treads someone here made his own. I don't have access to a welder so welding shafts together would be a challenge.
Any help here would be great, the lack of a heel toe is the only thing keeping me from buying now. I have a fused ankle joint so I have 0 movement in my ankle. I know some are going to say why not find another bike you like with the shifter. Problem is most bikes I sit on the kickstand is in a spot I can't get my leg hooked around it to pull it up, the FLD I can. Sorry for being so long winded but no heel toe shifter really is a deal breaker. If I can't find something that works I'll stay with my metric, but I really would like to get a HD finally. This is one of the few bikes that fits right AND I can work the kickstand.
All I did was take 2 Flh shifters, had em laying around, cut the shifter (spline block) off. tapered the end some Drilled a hole for the taper to fit. This was nothing but a center point for welding. Welded it together after setting it to fit me. Painted black. Did not have any stainless wire.
Took about 45 minutes to do.
Did not care for it, I could have made some adjustments to fit me and work better for me. But I am not much of a heel/toe shifter guy.
I got my foot ran over at work couldn't pull up with my left foot
it was a must for me. expensive if u buy new parts. heritage shaft/arm spliced with dyna arm pegs and levers add up to large pile of cash. i cut every corner less than ten bux in this mod. would want close to three hundred just for the part no pegs no levers, if i were to make one for someone else. not to mention a rechrome/powdercoat. i held no less than six different levers in my hands trying to make this work. this was easiest way out. good luck
I got it to work without having to cut or weld anything. I purchased the softail shift rod and one more FLD shift lever. I went to a friend that took and bent the shift rod in about the same shape as the one that came off the bike. I used 1 7/16" washer and the little S (and this is what the dealer called it) spring looking thingy and installed it. On the picture it shows my first attempt at this. I had placed a nylon spacer on there but found it to be too big so that is why I went with a washer. The clearance between the shift linkage and the outer primary is roughly 1/16 of an inch. I am still playing around with the shift lever placement to get it just right and will post a pic once I am completely satisfied with the results but for now here it is
