Off the show room floor there is not a big difference but the 103 perks up when you start to mod. There is no replacement for displacement and a modded 103 will smoke a modded 96 given the same type of mods. 7 cubic inches is a lot of cubic air........... much bigger pop when the spark plug fires.

You make some good points. I am a small guy about 5"8 and am 62 years old. I think the limit I would be comforatble as far as weight when I am stopped and having to move the bike around would be about what a Superglide weighs. I have been looking at a 2012 Superglide with 10,000 miles on it. It has stock pipes, bags, windshield, upgraed foot pegs rider & passenger, and upgraded speedo with tach. The dealer wants $11,999 for it. I think the new 14 Superglides start at about $14,999 I think. So I am weghing getting a 2014 versus the 2012 I just described. Not sure how good the used price is.

If the 103 dodn't cost much more it would be worth getting but don't let it be a deal breaker if you find a dyna you like with the 96.

My wife rode 2up on the sporty but it was cramped. The dyna is very comfy for her and she has all kinds of room. I did add a backrest, a touring seat, and the mini floorboards for her...she loves the set up and the only time I even feel her on there is in very slow manuvering and braking. I've done 100mph with her on the back and there was much more throttle still left.

Whatever year you get, I would suggest not skimping with the stage one. A quality 2-1 pipe (no slip ons), A/C, and a quality tuner and maybe a dyno tune.

You'll find the dyna will do just as well as the sporty in the twistys but will be a lot more stable at higher hiway speeds.
Exactly what Rooti said.
And like him, I traded my Sporty in for the FXDC. It's a WAY more comfortable bike than your Sporty is.

I've done about the same mods as Rooti has for comfort...better seat, backrest, detach windshield, different pegs, etc.
Also like he said don't skimp on the stage 1...go with a good 2-1 pipe, open breather and get it dyno tuned with a good tuner (SEPST or TTS). Do it right the FIRST time instead of trying to save $ because you will just end up doing it down the road (ask me how I know).
I have also done cams, which make a big difference too, but that's getting off-topic.
As far as comfort for 2 up riding, the Dyna will be a huge improvement for you.

btw - the '14s have the 103.
There's not much difference between the stock 96 & stock 103. Doing a quality stage 1 on either will make a huge difference & really wake them up.
Start doing cams & other stuff, then there are way too many variables, but the 103 will always have slightly more than the 96 with the same mods.

I just bought a 13 street bob, because the difference of a stock 103 and 96 are marginal. But, they through in a ridiculous amount of parts and store credit if I bought the 13. Plus it was right there and didn't have to wait for them to find one. The 13 and 14 were pretty much the same price. But I got almost a grand in free parts and a $400 store credit to get the 13.

I'm very happy with my 2013 Anniversary with the 96. I had an Ultra Classic for a few years with a 96. It has plenty of zip for me as it is. And it's just a damn pretty bike.

As for the comfort, I am 6-2 and my wife is 5-7 and we road from outside of Denver to Las Vegas and were both comfortable and had enough room for our stuff. Well - there was enough room some of my stuff and a whole lot more of her stuff!
