Default RE: Being jerked around

I rode in a funeral procession today and it was the worst ride I have ever had on it. We travelled about5 miles, in first gear, and the bike acted like it was going to sputter and die the whole time.

I know this has been discussed in other threads but should I take it to the dealer and pay to get it tuned or get a PCIII and try it myself? I really like the slip-ons I have but Mudpuddle keeps displaying pics of his bike and it makes me want to get some of the short pipes.

Thanks for all the help.

Hey Beavis as I posted before, my bike did the same thing at low speeds. I took it to the stealer he tried to sell me a race tuner without even looking at my bike much less riding it. I also have the race down load SE slip ons and A/C. I got pi$$ed went home dank a beer or two and took a look at this thing. After removing the A/C I noticed that the butterfly in the throttle body didnt move until I took up the slack in the throttle. Before looking I didnt realise I even had any slack. At low speeds the butterfly is just cracked, as you move the throttle even a little to maintain speed the butterfly closes as you get to this slack near the bottom of throttle. the bike is fighting between idle and go all the while. There wasnt much slack in the grip at all, and this is how my bike came from the dealer.A little adjustment went a long way for me. It may not help you any but it is something to check before shelling out alot cash for something that may not be needed. Before I made this adjutment the bike ran fine at idle but ran like sh$$ just above idle. I hope I have explained myself so you can make sense of what I'm talking about. Good Luck

Thanks for the tip.

I will yank the A/C off tonight and take a look. That would be sweet if it could be a simple fix.

I agree with the throttle play, I keep my throttle screw a little snug and its stops that freeplay in the throttle......

Nice looking ride.

If you are in 2nd gear, should be no jerking at 18mph.

My bet is on the primary chain being too loose... unless your bike is really out of tune.

WOW thats a no no 18 mph in second gear that is lugging the engine. these twin cams need rpms plus the six speed is geared diff
If you are still accelerating quickly, I might agree with you. He was talking about cruising though.

Whenever I try to keep the throttle steady (like trying to go around 18 MPH) the bike lurches and sounds like it is sputtering.
The 6-speed stuff, that may be different though.

Update:

I have been saving the pennies for a Power Commander and it arrived today from FuelMoto. Installed it and now the bike runs nice and smooth when I hold the throttle steady. I might have to "tweak" the map a little bit but I am very happy with the results so far (only took it for a quick spin).

Thanks for all the help and see you guys on the road.

Mine did that before I went to the PCIII. It just runs REALLY lean even with that "race" download. Get a SERT or PCIII and report back.

I have had this problem with my sportster, What I do if I want to just idle around parking lots is put the bike in second gear and feather the clutch. I also make sure the primary is well adjusted and It goes away , I would think that it is a torque vs gearing issue ...Mark...

what gear are ya in?? sounds like you may be lugging it. I have an 06 SG with the 8 degree injectors and I have not had any problem (but probably after typing this[&:])
