Thats what I did when I installed these springs the spacer they supplied hardly had any pre-load. I went to Lowes and bought some pvc and made my own.

So I took out one spring and spacer and according to progressive website I do have the right spring and spacer. It seams like everything is a cluster f^$#@K lately as far as getting the right parts for this bike

The HD manual the fork oil setting at 3.74 from the top of the fork. In the directions that came with the springs say

Fork oil level/volume should be checked according to the

steps outlined in your authorized shop manual. Measurement

of your fork oil by level is the preferred method. However,

some manuals only specify a volume measurement. Due to

the design of a progressive wound fork spring it will displace

more oil thus requiring a maximum oil level of 5.5" (140mm).

Caution: This is not a recommendation, it is only a

precautionary statement. If your manual specifies an oil

level higher than 5.5" (140mm) set the oil level at 5.5"

Should I set it at the factory specs or the spring recommendation

factory specs....your stock HD springs are a progressive type spring also.

What are you tryong to accomplish by changing out the spring? How much do you weigh?

Just ride it first before making any changes.
I had a similar experience on my 2004 Lowrider, it was easy to re install the fork cap after the Progressive springs were in.

I've used progressive springs before and even though I thought the front end felt more stable, I didn't think the ride was better. The best improvement I've found are the ricor intimidators with the amzoil shock therapy. One better would be the intimidators with a "single rate" spring made for your weight.

Even with these uprades, you have to make sure you dial in your front in with the proper sag for your weight. (adjusted by cutting or lengthening the spacer) This usually means you have to take measurements with just the bike, the bike with your weight, and the measurements of your forks fully extended. (on a lift) To get it really dialed in you will be taking it apart more then once but once it's set up properly, it will be set for life and you will see a huge difference.

I have done the intimidators with the 10w amzoil therapy fork oil (eventually changing to 5w) The intimidators adjust to whatever your traveling over from railroad tracks to scraped roads, tar snakes....I never stress over the front end anymore and have no jarring no matter what I ride over.

You do realize the HD springs are a progressive type? Take a look at them

I already told you that. You have to go by HD fork oil settings. It's a HD bike not a progressive bike. You are not changing the volume of the fork tubes.

Obviously their directions cover more then just your year and model otherise you would have the right spacer bar. If it was me I would just return it...but it's your bike

How did you drain the fork oil, did you pull the forks off the bike ?
