I have a quick question for someone knowledgeable on the subject.
I have a 08 FXDBi that I bought used. The previous owner had V&H big radius 2 into 2 pipes put on and I got a SERT when I bought the bike so I assume it's been tuned to match the pipes. I have not done any engine mods since I've owned it so I've not used the SERT.
What I'm not sure of is if any upgrade had been done to the air filter and what changes would need t be made to the tune if I changed the filter. I took the cover off the filter and this is what's under it:
Can anyone tell if that's the stock filter or if it's a upgrade?
If I install the new filter what else will I need to do in order to get it running right? Does it need a retune? Knowing I already have a SERT for the bike, what would a tune typically cost to just adjust for the air?
As far as I can tell, that is the stock air cleaner and filter. Which is odd if the pipes have been swapped out and tuning done, normally you'd swap out the air cleaner too, so finishing the stage-1.
Normally it doesn't matter much if you swap between air cleaners as long as they are after-market ones as they all flow better than stock. In your case though I think you are going to have to either put the canned stage-1 map on or get it dyno tuned.
I have been told that if you put a k&n in the stock filter housing using the stock backing plate, you don't have to get the bike tuned. But if you open up the intake by using a screamin eagle backing plate or an aftermarket intake, then a tune/fuel programmer is recommended.

The actual hole in the back plate that mates to the throttle body / carb is all the same size ( OE / Aftermarket ).
I'm running a K&N on my stock ham can intake. It definitely flows more air regardless of the intake. Even more so if you drill some holes in the back plate of the breather cover. Poor man's screaming eagle. I run this as part of my stage two.
Looks like a stage 1 to me. Had the same on my 08 fxdb. Is there a large plastic shroud on the manifold side of the filter that the cover mates up to? If so its stock.
Hope that helps.

If you're talking about the black part on the back side of this, no, it's not present. The back side of mine it pretty open.

That's a stock air filter and backing plate. The K&N filter you listed or any similar set-up (Screaming Eagle, Arlen Ness, etc.) will complete Stage 1.
You should be able to see what cal is loaded to the SERT. If its not already Stage 1 (probably is or why buy the SERT) then load the Stage 1 cal. and you should be good to go.
Just adding pipes doesn't usually require a re-cal...but if he put the SERT in he must have loaded the Stage 1 anyway. Stock bikes are just too lean and some do a stage 1 cal without any mods just to richen the mixture a bit.

Heres how mine looks mounted currently, no backing plate.
So, am i probably already setup for stage 1 pipes and air and changing the filter to a different stage 1 air setup wont matter much in regards to how its tuned?
