Part of the motorcycle ride is enjoying the freedom with the wind in my face and the bugs in my teeth...I only put on the windshield to protect me from the gravel and other hard stuff thrown up by the traffic when I am going to ride on the freeway...which I try to avoid anyway...

The OP never said anything about no wind at all as others have implied. He asked about no buffeting which a lot different than wind. The stock shield on my old Valkyrie gave me no buffeting at all, but I can't find a shield for Harley that doesn't buffet the crap out of my head. I'm 5'8" and I think your height has a lot to do with whether you get buffeting or not.

it does. the 1st step in stopping buffetting is to make sure the windshield is the correct height. air should be passing above your helmet or just skirting the top of it at your preferred speed. but that will only partially solve the issue. if there is air coming from under/around the windshield you may have buffetting as well. so with a correctly sized windshield if you are still getting buffetting you need to look at where the air is coming from. the easiest way to do this is with your hand.

if your going with a short shield/flyscreen. you want the air to be hitting your collarbone or below.

but you also need to take into account that your 5'8 is not someone else's 5'8. and my 6'2 is not someone else's 6'2. while a 19" shield may work for me someone else might need a 21" if their torso is longer. riding position will also change air flow.

thats why its trial and error. because people are different.

There are a lot of different kinds of "buffeting" as mentioned by others. It can hit your legs and come up from there, it can come under the windshield, it can come around the windshield. And other things that impact it: rider height, height of windshield, curve of windshield, angle of your engine guard bar and foot rests or pegs. One thing you might want to look at is the Desert Dawgs. They often cut down a lot of the wind, and besides that they WILL keep the rainwater off your legs and feet, so might be easier to justify buying them! http://www.leadermotorcycle.com/harl...n-rain-guards/

The angle of your forks, your height, seating position, windshield, height etc... A lot of factors can explain why a ws will work on some bikes and not others. When I ride with my shorty helmet I can adjust the height on my qd WS to any height I desire without buffeting, with my ff helmet I have to clamp it about 1 1/4" min. above my lower tree on my FXD. I don't think I've ever read a post where someone has been happy using HD's ws on a FXDWG.
A wind vest would probably be the best alternative, there's a lot of rave reviews on them but personally I don't care for the looks of them
