Default Throttle grip replacement

2011 FXDC Super Glide

I am having some difficulty figuring out just how to get the throttle grip off for a replacement install.

I have watched this:
video several times.

If you look closely at the 54-55 second mark, it shows the housing coming right off with no difficulty at all. Completely off.....with the buttons staying behind.

This is my sticking point.....the housing on my bike (2011 FXDC) has the exact same set up as the one in the video.
"run/off" and "start" buttons.

However on my particular model, those buttons are wired on the inside and prevent the housing from just lifting off as seen in the video.

I can't see how the video bike housing can NOT have the same wires for the same buttons?? They have to be wired somehow right?
The video model shows the buttons staying intact and not removed as a part of the housing.....whereas with mine the buttons and the housing wants to come off as a unit....the buttons do not stay behind.

I can't get that housing up enough, to expose the cable connections, without doing some prying in the housing cracks. The rear part of this housing comes apart ok. But that pesky front part (or forward) won't move much because of the wiring inside that is attached to the buttons.

Sliding the grip back, or partially off, can get me enough room to access the inside (or rearward) cable assembly point and I could get that one undone.
However, the outside cable is another matter. The cable itself is tighter, now that the grip is backed off and there appears to be no way to undo it without some serious forcing.
If I slide the grip back on a little bit, the cable relaxes but my access is very limited. Not nearly enough to get the cables out of the attach point.
(yes I backed off the nut adjusters all the way)

Now I am a little timid to proceed much further, in fear of doing damage.
I must be missing something.....those buttons in the video appear to stay put and the housing lifting off with them not attached.

I know you guys have a easier/better way right.....or enlighten me what I am doing wrong.

should be simple, maybe try removing the cables from the thottle body might give you more slack to work with. dont get the cables mixed up at the intake, one should have a spring on it.

sometimes i use a ice pick to get it under the cable and work my way up to the cable end, its hard to explain but i think you will understand

I just did this two nights ago on my 2013 fat bob. Was pretty simple, i am not sure if it is the same on your model as mine. But mine had the throttle cables inside the switch housing. A simple losing of the throttle cables and I could pull the cables out and my grip slid right off.

The other side took a little twisting and elbow grease but popped out easy enough..

All in all hardest part was making sure I had the grips aligned the same way, perfectionist view of things in all.

Long story short mine was just like the one in the video.

Here is another video on grip installs.
Look carefully at the 4:04/4:05 segment.
See where the housing comes right off, leaving the switches intact and they do not stay attached to the housing.

On mine, those switches stay in the housing as it's removed....and I can't raise that housing enough to get at the forward, or front, cable....due to the wire holding things back.

I must be missing something to get the switches to stay put and not stay attached to the housing.

I have pushed on them when the housing is loose and they don't budge.
Are they glued or somehow attached to the inside of the housing which prevent them from releasing on the inside of the housing?
From both videos, it sure seems like the switches stay put and are not at all attached to the housing.

My switch buttons are loose when the housing comes apart. You should be able to push them through the hole as you're separating the housing. Is it doing the same on the clutch side?

These buttons are sold as replaceable items, so they are definitely meant to come loose. I'm thinking they are just stuck and need a firm push.

Do you have any slack in you wiring where the come out of the handlebars over the triple tree?

On closer inspection, there is a small metal bracket under the top housing that are holding the switches in place. This bracket has little tabs that go into a slot on both sides of the upper housing. There must be a way to release those tabs but I can't see it.

I tried to get that bracket to move by gently using some pliers.
It won't budge and I don't want to force it more.

What did finally work, is turning the wheel all the way to the right...this allowed the electric cable, that feeds into the switch housing, to have enough slack in it to get the housing lifted up enough where I can get access to the cable end attachment points.
Bob had it nailed on his suggestion. Check the slack on the electric cable.

Although I never did get the housing free of the switches, I am sure I can now complete the grip change out.
