I Went into the garage
Sat on my new 2014 Hd-1 custom built Street Bob with only 46 mikes on it.I still had the forks turned and on the kick stand.I Engaged the clutch, went to start it and the bike jump out...The bike and I went down hard.
It Broke my front brake lever, scratch and dented my muffler and scratched my mirror.
I Called the dealer and asked if was covered by the warranty. They said to bring it in so they could check to see if the issue was caused by me or a malfunction of the bike before they would say it would or wouldn't be covered. At any rate the bike is in the garage and the clutch will not engage. So HD is picking it up Thursday since I cant even start it. I'm going to video tape the guy trying to move the bike to document that indeed the clutch will not engage.
I've felt my bike move when I start it in 1st gear while holding down on the clutch. Rarely start in 1st gear. After hearing your story, will try to turn it on in neutral and hold down the clutch.
don't you mean you pulled in the clutch to start the engine and it won't disengage-stuck.
Put it in neutral then start it and see if the clutch will turn loose.
HD bikes will do that if they sit fer a spell.
good luck man you must be sick. normally there is a lot of drag on the clutch if you try to move it in gear with it with it not running. it shouldn't be so much that it takes off the stand. I always start it in neutral as a habit from my ironhead.
Sticky clutches are not a HD issue. All bikes with a wet cutch have that issue. Been there, learned that. Now always pull in clutch and brake when starting. Hope you get your bike fixed before the weather clears, so you can get some more miles under those tires.
Guy there is definately some thing wrong. The bike should not turn over while in gear with the clutch lever out. You said engaged the clutch.... pulling the lever dis-engages the clutch. If for any reason the clutch failed to dis-engage the switch should not have allowed the starter to engage. IMO HD should be liable for any collateral damage due to such a catastrophic failure.
The reason I said that HD bikes are know for it is I have several bikes, 3 hd bikes, and 3 none hd but only the HD bikes are the only ones I have experienced it with. I talking about through many years.
I am certain there are more that does it though.
I always start mine in neutral.
I hope things work out for you. It is a sick feeling when something like this happens with a new bike.
The first scratch, first ding, first paint chip is always sicking. At least it was minor.
The switch has nothing to do with the clutch sticking. Once the clutch is pulled in it will crank or try to.
Thanks for the replies. I normally start it in neutral as well. Neutral is still hard to get into. Id like to add it doesnt have drag it literally rolls a few inches and catches and stops dead. I'm leaving it like this until harley picks it up. Im going to be putting a 2 into 2 vance and hines on it and putting the mirrors on it that have the turn signals incorporated. But I still want my stock ish shinny new. Hopefully they make it right.
